The new Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) came into effect on July 1, 2014. This legislation applies to all ‘Commercial Electronic Messages’ including email, texting and social media private messaging, sent either from a computer in Canada or received at a computer in Canada.
Under the new law, businesses can be fined up to ten million dollars (!) for sending electronic messages which a recipient doesn’t want to receive, even if those messages are one-to-one messages sent by a real human being for legitimate purposes.
Obviously, we’d like to avoid million dollar fines. But we’d also like to stay in business and continue serving our clients to the best of our ability, with email playing a vital role in communications.
